Diving Deep

In the beginning of working on any thesis project there are usually the same things involved, namely reading a whole bunch of papers on the subject, soaking up all the information you can and trying to get it all organized somehow so you can refer to it later on when writing the thesis paper. Another thing we need to do in the beginning our project is to write an opposition on previous thesis projects to help us get a feeling on how these reports are written.

A great tool when trying to structure large amounts of information is to use mind mapping software. I invested in the application MindNode Pro today and already I feel that it’s going to be incredibly helpful, especially now in the beginning of the project.

MindNode Pro for mac is a great tool when structuring your work

I also found a very interesting AR blog that I can really recommend to anyone interested in the subject. http://gamesalfresco.com/ posts news and talks in the field of AR, and I think it is going to be a great resource in keeping up to date on new things happening in the field.

The First Steps

Day one of the internship is finished, and the road ahead is getting a bit more clear. A lot of planning for the coming months, and trying to figure out exactly what it is we are supposed to do.

During the day we had a meeting with one of our co-workers, Syed, that told us about his previous projects in Augmented Reality and showed us some cool stuff. He introduced us to the AR game Shadow Cities, which is a location based AR game that put you into the role of a mage defending your city from other players. The game is really well designed and is a thrill to play. The semi-3D map of your location makes the world feel really alive and vibrant, with spirits and players roaming around on the map.

After an hour or so of testing out the game (trying to look at features while Kenneth was putting daggers in my back), I came to the conclusion that the game was addictive and Kenneth is a backstabbing ass, and put the game down.

We have also found a very interesting Swedish company called 13th lab that works with AR and has created the very cool iPad2 app “Ball Invasion” which really shows the potential of AR. After contacting them we have been invited to visit their office to check out their technology which is going to be really exciting.

Signing out of the office for today, exciting times ahead!

Where It All Begins

This blog will act as a diary during my masters thesis internship at The Mobile Life in Stockholm, Sweden in the field of Augmented Reality.
I will write about the progress of the internship, experiences and adventures during it, and share interesting AR-related things I find.

Today was the first real day in the office, and most of the time was spent getting up to speed with how things work around here, as well as sorting out all the things necessary from the university to get the master thesis course going.

These first two weeks will act as a pilot study into the field of AR, trying to find out as much cool stuff as possible.
